Senator Datuk Armani Mahiruddin said that among the assistance provided through the relevant agencies include skills training that is in high demand in the market which would enable the recipients to increase the income for a better livelihood for their families.

In the locality, the five key areas that have attracted public interest are souvenirs, grooming courses, commercial food industry, handphone repairs and reflexology. “The training and assistance alone will not suffice. The constant follow up and advice from the relevant development officers will ensure these budding entrepreneurs drive closer to success.

“If the businesses chosen by the 1Azam recipients are implemented with passion, hard work and honesty, it is not impossible for their efforts to bear fruits.

“The government’s vision of increasing the income for this low-income category will also be achieved and it will help these communities to be elevated from their low income status,” said the Sabah Umno Wanita chief.

Armani added that the aim was to create a steady source of income between RM700 and RM2,000 a month which can be achieved if the entrepreneurs put in the effort and adopt a competitive edge to their businesses.

“Eradication of poverty continues to be a key deliverable under the 10th Malaysia Plan through implementation of several programmes under the Federal and State Governments,” she shared.

The 1Azam programme is an initiative under the Low-Income Households NKRA of the GTP. Sabah was one of the early adopters of this programme with a total allocation of RM6mil in 2009.

The Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry have received a total of RM1.4 million to implement the 1Azam programme for deserving participants who meet the requirements this year.

To date, 815 participants from the whole district including the Parliamentary areas of Libaran, Sandakan, Batu Sapi, Kinabatangan and Beluran have been provided 1Azam assistance in the form of equipments and training.
