Its minister, Datuk Hasan Malek said such changes would help transform
the capabilities of the workforce in SKM to serve the people better.
"They (SKM) must not only play a monitoring role or supporting role but
rather go to the ground and understand the needs of the people.
"In the United States, cooperatives have become a main sector. Although
SKM is currently the third main sector in the country, there is room for
improvement in efforts to become the main sector," he said in his
speech at the SKM Excellence Service Awards, in the capital, Monday.
Also present were Deputy Minister Datuk Paduka Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah,
the ministry's Secretary-General Datuk Saripuddin Kasim, SKM's Executive
Chairman Datuk Nik Ali Mat Yunus.
Hasan later presented Excellent Service awards to 111 SKM staff.
