SUBANG JAYA, March 7 (Bernama) -- The cooperative sector's target of 20 per cent contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) by 2020 needs the support of the Cooperative Commission of Malaysia (SKM) and the Co-operative College of Malaysia (MKM).

Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, said the sector, which currently contributed 11 per cent to GDP, needed another 19 per cent increase in seven years to achieve the target.

"SKM needs to understand the current needs of about 10,000 co-ops with over seven million members nationwide and help the members in their undertakings so that they can help the sector achieve the target," he told a media briefing after meeting with SKM and MKM here today.

Ismail Sabri said the co-op sector was behind manufacturing and services sectors in the contributions to GDP.

He said the new SKM chairman Datuk Nik Ali Mat Yunus and new director-general Dr Ahmad Zahiruddin Yahya would help spur the co-op sector to achieve the target.

"It is hoped that the new leaderships will bring new work culture in the two organisations," he said.
