"This does not include franchisees. In 2008, there were 3891 franchisees, and the number has risen to 5284 this year," he told reporters at the launch of the 2013 Asean Franchise & Expo (AFES).

The expo, being held for the first time in Malaysia, ends tomorrow, and is attended by 31 local and 29 international firms, with food and beverage franchises accounting for 35 per cent of the total.

Ismail Sabri urged prospective franchise operators to venture into new areas such as education, childcare and healthcare and not just focus on food.

The government will also add allocations to the the RM8 million micro-franchise loan scheme which has only about RM1 million left, he added.
