BERA (Nov 28, 2012): The government has tasked two
cooperatives to get more Chinese traders to participate in the Retail
Shop Transformation Project (Tukar) which has attracted less than 10 per
cent of entrepreneurs from the community so far, Domestic Trade,
Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob
said here.

The government had also provided an allocation of RM8 million to the
cooperatives - Koperasi Jaya Diri Malaysia Bhd and Koperasi Peralihan
Usahawan Bersatu Cina - to do the job, which involved disseminating
information on the project in Chinese to the targeted traders, he said.
Ismail Sabri said Chinese traders were reluctant to participate in
the project because they could not obtain clear explanation of the
project.
"We hope the two cooperatives will help disseminate the relevant
information on Tukar in Chinese dialects to the traders for them to
better understand the project," he told reporters after a dialogue with
Chinese traders in Triang, here, yesterday.
Tukar is one of 13 Entry Point Projects under the Economic
Transformation Programme to modernise 500 small retailers and
co-operatives by the end of the year.
Ismail Sabri said it was not necessary for traders joining the Tukar
project to sell only 1Malaysia products at their outlets as they could
also sell other goods.
"The management of the business is upgraded under the Tukar project to be more systematic," he said. – Bernama

Dr M: M’sia needs proper rule for gold trading, investment

“I recommend gold as a kind of reserve or saving, better than money, as it is more likely to appreciate.
“I do not know what's the issue with this Genneva company, but I think it should be investigated to find out what did it do wrong.
“On the other hand, people (the investors) also deserve fair treatment because if you totally stop the transactions, their money will get stuck,” he told reporters after delivering a keynote address at the 3rd World Riba Conference.
Last month, Genneva Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a gold trading company, alongside a few other companies of similar business nature were raided by Bank Negara, the police, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry and the Companies Commission of Malaysia.
Assets and accounts were seized and frozen to facilitate investigations into suspected offences, including illegal deposit-taking and money laundering.
It was reported that a total of 142.7kg in gold and monies (in bank accounts and cash) amounting to RM101.9mil were seized from Genneva Malaysia, Pageantry Gold Bhd, Caesar Gold Sdn Bhd and Worldwide Far East Bhd.
On the issue of riba or interest and its link to continued global recession, hyperinflation as well as social unrest, Dr Mahathir said riba was dangerous as there was no fixed return and the bank itself had to participate in the business.
“The (Islamic) banks know it must be in the business that gave the return where it wouldn't just lend money just because for the sake of increasing its assets. They must ensure that the survival and the profitability of the business,” he said.
Conference chairman Prof Dr Ahamed Kameel Mydin Meera said it was more important now than before to discuss the issue of riba amid signals of another financial crisis brewing.
He said despite constant reports on the economic recovery, many economists believed that the world was up for another crisis as unemployment rates remained a prickly issue in most developed countries.
“The discourse on riba is even more pertinent in addressing entrenched financial practices and their damaging effects on day-to-day issues such as the rising cost of living and home affordability.
“It is because of riba or interest that our future generation will be enslaved by debts,” he said.
Ahamed is also head of department of finance, faculty of economics and management sciences at the International Islamic University Malaysia.
The two-day conference starting yesterday was organised by Thinkers Trend Resources with the theme “The Multifaceted Global Crisis on Riba: Resilience, Response and Reform.”

Laksanakan peraturan mengenai perdagangan emas - Dr. Mahathir
KUALA LUMPUR 26 Nov.

Dr. Mahathir turut menyentuh mengenai pelaburan emas Genneva Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.

He said regulations for gold trading was important as the precious yellow metal was traded in high value.
"This is very important as we need to buy and keep gold as gold appreciates in value," he told reporters on the sidelines of the Third Annual World Conference on Riba (usury).
Dr Mahathir said gold trading firm, Genneva Malaysia Sdn Bhd, should be investigated thoroughly on the firm's trading activities.
Genneva Malaysia was among four gold trading companies raided by the authorities, including Bank Negara Malaysia, on suspected offences like illegal deposit-taking, money laundering and tax evasion.
Other gold trading companies raided were Pageantry Gold Bhd, Caesar Gold Sdn Bhd and Worldwide Far East Bhd.
Dr Mahathir said Genneva should be investigated to find out exactly what they did that was wrong.
Asked whether the decision to investigate gold trading companies for suspected offences would cause a backlash to the government, Dr Mahathir said: "I feel that we should circumspect when taking a decision without fully appreciating the problem. Must investigate first."

Pelabur emas mesti ikut nasihat pakar
Kuala Lumpur: Public Gold Group Sdn Bhd yang menyasar disenaraikan di
Bursa Malaysia menjelang 2014, mengingatkan pelabur emas membuat

Parliament: Low Capital Micro Franchise Business Good For Low-Income People
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 (Bernama) -- People in the low- and medium-income
categories can engage in the micro franchise business because it
requires low capital, as little as RM16,000, said Deputy Domestic Trade,
Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim.
Source from (Bernama): http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v6/newsgeneral.php?id=710042
Published: November 21, 2012
She said the ministry was holding exhibitions nationwide to entice people in these categories to engage in the business.
"The ministry chooses franchises which require capital of RM50,000 and below to introduce the business to the target groups and change their perception of franchise business requiring millions of ringgit as capital," she said when replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Saifudin Nasution Ismail (PKR-Machang) in the Dewan Rakyat.
Saifudin had wanted to know the number of bumiputera franchisors who had penetrated the international market out of the 46 local companies which had ventured abroad.
Rohani said that of the 46 franchisors, nine or 20 per cent were bumiputera-owned.
"We encourage the growth of more such companies. We also encourage the merging of conventional business with the franchise business," she said.
She also said that the number of registered franchise businesses was 631, with 435 local-owned and of which 143 were bumiputera-owned.

Perniagaan Mikro Francais Boleh Diceburi Golongan Berpendapatan Rendah, Sederhana
KUALA LUMPUR, 19 Nov (Bernama) -- Golongan berpendapatan rendah dan
sederhana berpeluang menceburi bidang perniagaan mikro francais kerana

Harga berlian pecah rekod
Habsburgs berbangsa Hungary, Archduke Joseph August of Austria
(1872-1962).

Published: November 16, 2012

World gold demand slides in Q3 as China's economy bites-WGC
LONDON (Nov 15, 2012): Global gold demand dropped 11%
in the three months to September from record levels seen in the same
period last year, dampened mainly by fading Chinese fervour as its
economy slowed, with stronger Indian demand stemming a larger fall, the
World Gold Council (WGC) said.

Chinese gold consumption fell 8% in the July to September period to 176.8 tonnes, the WGC's quarterly demand trends report showed on Thursday, with both jewellery and investment demand hurt by a slowing economic growth.
Data last month showed China's economy slowed for a seventh straight quarter in the July to September period. Chinese bar and coin investment dropped 12% to 53 tonnes, while jewellery buying fell 5% to 123.8 tonnes.
"The fall in Chinese demand coincides with weaker economic numbers in China in Q3," the WGC's managing director of investment research Marcus Grubb said.
"There is some evidence that the economic situation is stabilising in China and recovery is starting... it's possible that the stimulus measures have worked and the economy has bottomed out.
"If that's true, we won't see a repeat of this Chinese weakness in the fourth quarter," he said.
China is second to India as the world's biggest gold consumer. Indian demand rose in the last quarter by 9% to 223.1 tonnes, reversing the trend of the previous three quarters, with pent-up consumer demand lifting the market.
First-half buying was dented by jewellers' strikes, a hike in import duty and a dearth of auspicious days for weddings.
"Finally we're starting to see the Indian market come back," Grubb said. "And the anecdotal evidence is good looking forward to fourth quarter demand - premiums are high again in the Mumbai market, and the strength of the rupee has meant you have seen rupee prices moderate somewhat."
India's consumer gold demand remains down 24% in the first three-quarters of the year, however, and is unlikely to record a net increase in 2012 as a whole, the WGC said.
Global jewellery consumption dipped 2% to 448.8 tonnes, while coins and bar demand fell 30%. European investors, particularly in German-speaking markets, accounted for half of the 128.1-tonne decrease in bar and coin demand.
"European investment is lower than it's been for some time in the retail market. You're not seeing that insurance demand and safe asset demand from Germany and Switzerland that we were seeing last year," Grubb said.
Coin and bar demand also fell by 52% in the US to 10.5 tonnes, and by 66% in Turkey to 7.9 tonnes. Indonesia, Taiwan and Thailand also saw large declines.
Bullion demand to back gold exchange-traded funds - which issue securities backed by physical metal - jumped to 136 tonnes from 87.4 tonnes, however.
Central banks continued to diversify their reserves into gold in the third quarter, but buying was down by nearly a third year-on-year. Official sector demand reached 97.6 tonnes last quarter, down from 140.8 tonnes a year before.
Grubb said in the full year demand was likely to outstrip 2011's 47-year high.
"The quarter was bad, but we're still ahead of where we were last year, which was a record going back to 1964," he said. "If we get another 100 tonnes or so in the fourth quarter, you're talking a figure for the full year that's higher than 2011." – Reuters

Kuala Terengganu: Koperasi Muamalat Bersatu Terengganu Bhd (KMBTB)

Gold, That Fascinating Yellow Metal
I DO NOT doubt gold's stature as an almost universal form of store of
value. One incident related to me a long time ago by a friend
underscored this. Almost four decades ago, with the end of the Vietnam War came a small
flood of Vietnamese refugees and some headed for our shores enroute to
one developed country or another willing to accept them. When they
landed here, some were able to purchase provisions to continue their
journey. If they had to pay for purchases with something that was
accepted here, what would that be? Certainly not with Vietnamese
currency. Instead, sewn into the hem of their clothes was gold.

Its use in as money all through history has been helped along by this kind of universal acceptance. It does not rust and is thus durable. And most of all, it was a very good store of value all through history. So good that the token and fiat money that became more commonly used eventually had to be pegged to gold so as to buttress their role as store of value.
More recently, what had been a reasonably good internationally accepted store of value, the US dollar (and by inference, all national currencies currently in issue due to the US dollar's stature as the most important reserve currency against which all currencies are valued) has become increasingly inept in this role.
Our attempts to earn a reasonable rate of return on the "money" we accumulate over our life cycle is at least partially a function of our efforts to earn a rate of return that somewhat if not more than offsets the worsening performance of money when acting as a store of value.
It has not helped that central banks worldwide have forced the return on the safer asset classes to almost nothing. I'll say kudos to the Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia for refusing to join this herd of central bankers but even the relatively high level she has kept interest rates here at, does not adequately reflect the time value of money for many people.
The fallout from relentless central bank manipulation of financial markets is that interest rates are far removed from what market-clearing rates would be if free from central bank intervention, and returns from investing in even relatively risky investments are now proving inadequate. So, many people seek out investment assets the workings of which they do fully comprehend in order that their target investment returns can be met.
One of the more curious developments lately has been a rise in efforts to promote gold as a form of investment.
Some of these involve gold or notional claims on gold. Some are simply derivatives of financial instruments that are themselves pegged to the value of gold.
Buying ornamental gold is rarely an investment option. Too much of the price represents the goldsmith's craftsmanship. Investing more than a small portion of one's wealth in bullion such as official issue coins (e.g. Kijang, Maple, Kangaroo, Krugerrand or the Buffalo, Eagle or Double Eagle) involves much in storage costs.
Other investment alternatives are gold futures, shares in gold mining companies and gold exchange-traded funds but one of the few options on the domestic front is gold- or cash-settled gold-linked bank deposit accounts.
The important thing to note is that gold itself is not money in the modern monetary system despite common claims to the contrary. There is not enough gold above ground worldwide to allow it to serve this function. Its value measured in any currency is determined by the demand for gold and its supply, just like any commodity. This means the returns from gold investments measured in the numeraire of currencies can in fact be quite negative over certain periods of time when demand gets depressed, and in any case, never the kind of fabulously high, even fixed monthly returns of the sort promised by dubious investment schemes.
Factors affecting demand, hence gold price levels include rising incomes (which boosts demand for ornamental gold), speculative demand, industrial activities (such as gold drawn wires for use in electronics) and curiously, demand from central banks (for use as reserves).
Those affecting supply are the pace of production, the cost of production (a function of technology and also the strength of the currencies of the major producing nations relative to ours) and central bank gold sales.
One potential game changing new source of demand is a plan still in exploratory stages to allow banks to count bullion held as assets carrying zero risk weights, thus replenishing the stock of AAA-rated sovereign issues that have become depleted in the past year or two due to the spate of ratings downgrades.

Miners risk all in pursuit of gold
THE VILLAGE of Ciguha in Bogor is less than 100 kilometers from Jakarta, but the two places are worlds apart. The village buzzes with the roar from thousands of rock-crushing
machines operating 24 hours a day. Occasionally, a strong breeze whips
up clouds of blinding dust from the beaten dirt roads, which are packed
with weary-faced young men covered in mud.

Published: November 12, 2012
The men are illegal miners, known locally as gurandil. In search of gold, they walk barefoot, marching like ants into nearby quarries in the belly of a dome-shaped hill called Pongkor.
Fresh water is scarce in Ciguha. Much of the groundwater has been contaminated with mercury and cyanide, a telltale sign of the extent of the illegal gold mining operation taking place in the village. The local police station, a 30-minute drive downhill, is littered with posters and signs warning that illegal mining is punishable by up to 10 years in jail.
Despite its proximity to the capital and the threat of a lengthy jail
term, the illegal mining operations in Ciguha have reached an
industrial scale.
The local population has ballooned from a few hundred 11 years ago to around 3,000 according to a recent police estimate - at one point police even put the figure at 9,000 - turning this once sleepy farming village into a boomtown.
The nearby quarries have become mass graves for countless gurandils, with cave-ins and mudslides a real threat even when the sky is clear. The last official death toll was 214, back in 2004.
The miners know that each incident brings questions, investigations and scrutiny from the authorities, so a large number of accidents and deaths have likely gone unreported.
According to police, 16 illegal miners were killed in accidents over the past 12 months. The latest incident was in May in the neighbouring village of Pangradin, in Leuwiliang subdistrict, where eight gurandils were killed in a landslide.
"What's strange is that the area has no proven gold reserves," says Uba Subandi, the Leuwiliang subdistrict police chief.
Nanggung subdistrict chief Rumambi says there is little he can do to stop the influx of gurandils, 70 per cent of whom he says come from outside the subdistrict, including other parts of West Java, the neighbouring province of Banten, and as far afield as Lampung, Bengkulu and Kalimantan.
Dodi Susanto, an official with the Ciliwung, Cisadane and Citarum Rivers Monitoring Agency, says his office last conducted an assessment on the environmental impact in the Ciguha area in 2010, and the findings were worrying.
The agency found indications that the rivers around Ciguha, like the Cipangaten, the Cikadarak and the Cimarinten, had mercury levels of 60 to 400 milligrams a liter, far above the 0.01-milligram a liter limit tolerated by the government.
Mercury poisoning can be lethal in humans. The worst case in Indonesia occurred in 2004 in Buyat Bay, North Sulawesi, where Newmont Nusa Tenggara, the local subsidiary of US gold miner Newmont, had for years been dumping its mining tailings.
Although thousands of people fell ill, a court later declared that the bay was not polluted and that Newmont had complied with environmental regulations.
The risk of mercury poisoning doesn't seem to worry the illegal miners in Ciguha, most of whom handle the hazardous chemical without protective gloves, goggles or masks. Mercury is readily available throughout the village, with nearly every foodstall and coffee shop selling the chemical in empty mineral water bottles or plastic containers.
The threat of Ciguha or even Jakarta becoming another Buyat Bay is very real, with mercury levels of 0.38 to 10 milligrams per liter detected 24km downstream, where the rivers join up to form the Cikaniki and the Cisadane rivers.
The Cisadane cuts through densely populated areas, including parts of Tangerang, and skirts past West Jakarta.
The Bogor Health Agency has already recorded one death associated with mercury poisoning, identifying the victim as 68-year-old Sahrudin from Cisarua village, in the same subdistrict as Ciguha.
Authorities found signs that Sahrudin, who died of an undisclosed illness last year, had been exposed to large quantities of mercury over the course of many years. The health agency sought to carry out an autopsy to confirm that mercury poisoning was the direct cause of his death, but was repeatedly denied by Sahrudin's family.
Syahrir A.B., executive director of the Indonesian Mining Association, says the environmental damage wrought by illegal miners also threatens the operations of legitimate mining companies.
"Seven or eight years back, my company, Nusa Halmahera Mineral, was accused of polluting the water by using mercury, although we never used it," he says about his mining operation in North Maluku.
Syahrir adds that the company later conducted its own investigation and traced the environmental damage back to nearby illegal mining operations.
"These illegal miners never implement good mining practices, meaning that they don't have the slightest consideration for the environment or the well-being of the people," he says.
He also cites a recent case involving the firm Sorikmas Mining in North Sumatra.
"[Illegal miners] organised a protest and burned the Sorikmas encampment, [forcing its] operations to be halted," Syahrir says.
Andrie S. Wijaya, coordinator of the Mining Advocacy Network (Jatam), denies the notion that the illegal miners are wholly to blame.
"That's one-sided information. Although illegal miners can also damage the environment, their impact is not as grave as from that caused by mining companies," he says.
He adds that in the Sorikmas case, the incident was triggered by "the accumulation of frustration" among local residents rather than by illegal miners.
Indonesia is the world's seventh-largest gold producer, with foreign-owned mines currently responsible for the majority of the country's annual output, which reached 111 tonnes in 2011.
And with 4.23 billion tonnes of primary gold reserves and 16.88 million tonnes of alluvial reserves, according to 2010 estimates by the Indonesian government, there is much money at stake, luring more illegal miners to start operations even at the risk of losing their lives and getting into confrontations with large companies and security officers.

Penubuhan Koperasi Pertanian Cahaya Baru Kolapis Berjaya Bantu Jana Pendapatan Ahli
BELURAN, 7 Nov (Bernama) -- Penubuhan Koperasi Pertanian Cahaya Baru
Kolapis Sandakan Berhad sejak lima dekad lepas berjaya membantu 139
ahlinya menjana pendapatan.

“The total amount of gold seized during the raids from all the companies is approximately 142.7 kilogram, and monies in bank accounts and cash amounts to RM101.92mil,” the statement said.

On Oct 5, gold trading firms Pageantry Gold Bhd, Caesar Gold Sdn Bhd and Worldwide Far East Bhd were jointly raided for suspected offences that include illegal deposit-taking, money-laundering, tax evasion and avoidance and false description.

At least 5 gold mines in M'sia are under foreign listed companies
PETALING JAYA: While gold mining is not a new business activity in
Malaysia, it does not seem to have any significant domestic capital
market participation.
But the striking fact remains that at least five of the country's gold mines are part of the assets of many listed companies abroad.
Source from (The Star Online): http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2012/11/5/business/12272344&sec=business

Among them is a Raub mine operated by Raub Australian Gold Mining Sdn Bhd, which in turn is a subsidiary of Peninsular Gold Ltd, listed on London Stock Exchange's Alternative Investment Market.
The company is under the control of Datuk Seri Andrew Kam Tai Yeow with a 29.5% stake, who is also its chairman and chief executive.
Peninsular Gold is the only listed gold company with assets in Malaysia that is managed by locals, while the others seem to have foreign ownership (partly) and management.
But although profitable, Peninsular Gold's earnings are paltry for now.
For its six-months ended December 2011, the company recorded a net profit of £86,049 (RM421,734) on revenue of £6.805mil (RM33.35mil). The year before, it reported a profit of £657,283 (RM3.22mil) on revenue of £14.19mil (RM69.54mil). Its market capitalisation stands at around £18mil (RM88mil).
Peninsular
Gold's plans have been to use better technology in the extraction of
gold at its Raub plant, which has a proven reserve of 202,000 ounces of
gold.
Industry experts say there are three major mines in Malaysia located in Raub, Penjom and Selinsing, in Pahang.
Since June 2011, the Penjom mine has changed ownership. Norwegian Avocet Mining PLC divested its interest in the mine, which is now under the wings of privately held PT Bukit Makmur Mandiri Utama, Indonesia's second-largest mining contractor.
Details of the mine has been off the radar but according to last known data, the mine had produced 39,150 ounces of gold for the nine-months ended Sept, 2010.
The Selinsing mine, operated by Canada's Monument Mining Ltd, is another well-established gold mine, with a production of 44,585 ounces of gold recorded for its year ended June 2012. The mine lays claim to having one of the lowest production costs at US$306 (RM930) per ounce.
Monument Mining is also exploring other mining projects in the country, including the Mengapur polymetalic project near Sri Jaya, Pahang. The mine is said to have deposits of copper, sulphur, iron, gold and silver.
Another interesting miner is Singapore-listed CNMC Goldmine Holdings Ltd which has the rights to the 2,370 acres Sokor gold field. CNMC reckons that this gold field is the most prospective but undeveloped hard rock gold mining area in Malaysia.
In June, CNMC announced its gold reserves rose by 20% to 82,000 ounces.
CNMC is founded by one Lin Xiang Xiong, a Chinese national who is the chief advisor for China International Trade to the Kelantan state government.
For its six months ended June, the company recorded a net profit of US$482,646 (RM1.46mil) on a revenue of US$5.178mil (RM15.74mil).
Over in East Malaysia, a new kid on the block has emerged in the form of Canadian firm Olympus Pacific Minerals Inc. Olympus acquired the 1,400-sq-km Bau gold project as a result of the merger with Zedex Minerals Ltd in 2009, and now has a 83.25% interest in the project.
The project has 560,000 ounces of indicated gold and another 1.89 million ounces of inferred gold.
The Bau region is a historic gold field with many geological similarities to the Carlin District of Northern Nevada, which is one of the world's largest gold fields.
Largely focused in South-East Asia, Olympus is the largest gold producer in Vietnam and operates several underground narrow vein gold mines and an open-pit gold mine at its two production sites in Vietnam. It also has a gold field in the Philippines.
But the striking fact remains that at least five of the country's gold mines are part of the assets of many listed companies abroad.
